Thankfully the forecast rain never arrived and we enjoyed the incredible challenge of Rowdy Flat (near Yackandandah). It was a good leason – don’t let a weather forecast put you off attending an event!
Neil Barr, an experienced orienteer and prolific mapper from Bendigo, made the trip simply because it was Rowdy Flat. Similar for Sue Key, who made the trip from Melbourne. And James Lithgow, an experienced orienteer from Sydney, also drawn by the attraction of this incredible terrain. Rowdy Flat is such a unique map that it attracts all keen orienteers!
Peter Mousley had a comfortable win on Long Hard over James Lithgowwhile Nick Mousley finished just 2 seconds ahead of Michael Burt for third, rounding out an Interclub podium sweep for AWOC.
Neil Barr put his skills to good use, winning Short Hard. AWOC’s Liz Wood, Tony Perrott and Rob SImmons made it a second Interclub podium clean sweep for AWOC. Unfortunately for Sue Key, she went straight past the last control close to the finish, for what otherwise would have been the winning time.
Jeremy Smith was taught orienteering by Tony Perrott back in their days at The Scots College Albury. Tony’s tutorlidge must have stuck as Jeremy, having not orienteered for 15 years, had a win on the Moderate course! Norm McCann was second but WaggaRoos’ Tom Janetzki spoilt AWOC’s record of podium sweeps by finishing third.
John Trevivian was the only competitor on Easy as the weather forecast seemed to scare away some families. But John completed the well-set course to boost AWOC’s big points haul.
Thanks to course setter and event organiser Rick Armstrong – it’s not just running Rowdy Flat that’s challenging, but course setting also!
