What an incredible way to finish off an excellent season of Interclub competition!

Glorious sunshine, a map we haven’t used for many years and was new to most, BBQ snags and 51 people there to enjoy it – absolutely incredible!!!

Elin Olsson and partner Max Carr recently escaped Melbourne to relocate to our region and made an immediate impression – Elin winning Long Hard by just 36 seconds from Briohny Seaman (WaggaRoos) with Max only 1:21 behind Briohny. Achievement of the day must go to Claire Sandford – persevering for almost 3 hours, determined to try a Long Hard course; well done Claire and a big thanks to Helen Robinson for helping out!

Jack Janetzki continued his domination of Short Hard to give WaggaRoos their only win for the day.

Gibb Willinck absolutely smashed Moderate, taking just 25:56 to complete the 2.7 km course. Perhaps he was in a hurry to get to his birthday lunch?! Tom Janetzki earned a second place for WaggaRoos with young Ruby Burns claiming the final podium position for AWOC.

A Bearded Dragon wonders who’s disturbing the peace (and if there are any BBQ leftovers!)

The Easy course was loaded with kids, so many so that we ran out of maps! The extended Harper family had a great time, with Finley getting the win over sisters Arabella and Sascha. Ryder Seaman (WaggaRoos) continues to impress for someone so young and claimed third. But what about the list of future superstars? Brothers Jarrah and Eddie Meston (WaggaRoos), Theo, Eve, Clara, Louis, Annie, Indiana and Caylina – all still very young but loving their orienteering!

The huge turnout of AWOCers and three course wins sealed the 2023 Interclub win for AWOC!!! After losing the series by just a couple points in 2022 it’s been extra special to win it back in such spectacular style this year. Everyone who has attended an event and/or helped out in some way needs to give themselves a big pat on the back – well done AWOC!

Thank you to WaggaRoos for another excellent Interclub series – it’s a challenge being a small club isolated from other orienteering clubs and the collaboration between WaggaRoos and AWOC is very important to both. We look forward to doing it all again in 2024.

Special thanks to course setter Tony Perrott. A few months ago Tony was asked to investigate using this area of the Nail Can map that hadn’t been used for many years. Not only did he gain access, he provided some important map updates and set courses at a good level for those competing, which is always much harder than it sounds. Well done Tony!

And we can’t forget our chefs – Liz Wood and Norm McCann for organising the BBQ. Much appreciated by all and a great way to cap off an incredible day.
